6th Annual SEE Private Equity & Venture Capital Forum

Our 6th Edition of our annual Private Equity and Venture Capital Forum took place on the 26th September 2013 at the prestigious Westin Hotel in Zagreb, Croatia. The conference brought together leading international experts and regional stakeholders, addressing current issues and opportunities within the private equity and venture capital markets within the Southeast European region.

We would like to thank our Official Event Partners,  The Croatian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association & Venture Xchange, The Serbian Private Equity Association, UK Trade and Investment and the Agency for Investments & Competitiveness, as well as our media partners, speakers and delegates. 

Special thanks to our Chairman of the day Mr. David Schoch from the Serbian Private Equity Association and Orion Telekom, and Co-organiser Ms. Mirna Marovic from the Croatian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association. 

Ms. Mirna Marovic, started the conference by welcoming the international and regional audience of Limited Partners, General Partners, Lawmakers, Investors, Regulators, Advisors and more. 

After the welcoming speech the chairman for the day, Mr. David Schoch, President of the Serbian Private Equity Association and Member of the Board of Orion Telekom, opened up the conference by setting the agenda for the day. 

Our honorary guest HM Ambassador David Slinn of The British Embassy in Zagreb provided a feature welcoming address, emphasising the importance of cross-border investments, and the need in developing a successful vehicle which will further investments and drive growth within the region. 

After the feature welcoming address, Mr. Rodolphe Blavy, Deputy Division Chief of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) took stage to deliver a presentation on the macroeconomic overview of the region, outlining the current situation of the region, and emphasising the importance of the strong need for changes of macroeconomic factors within SEE in order to improve and further FDI growth.  

The first session carried on by a presentation by Ms. Cornelia Bumbacea, Partner, Advisory-Deals, PwC, outlining the investment opportunities in key sectors, as well as addressing the current investment situation across the region.

The session was rounded up by the first panel of the day “Obstacles Facing Foreign Investors in the Region” moderated by Ms. Mirna Marovic, CVCA, and joined by Mr. Wilson Balachandra, Ernst & Young, Mr. Valeri Petrov, Bancroft Private Equity, Mr.Andrej Babache, Mid Europa Partners, Mr. Gregor Famira, CMS Reich-Rohrwig Hainz and Mr. Marko Makek, Nexus Private Equity. 

After the coffee break, the event proceeded by a panel discussion on Raising Capital for a Fund: LP & GP Relations. This panel discussion united leading LPs and GPs to discuss best practices and relationship building whilst fundraising. The panel was moderated by Mr. Mark Lesic, Managing Director, Nexus Private Equity Partners, and joined by Mr. Iannis Tsakiris, EIF, Mr. Troy Weeks, EBRD, Mr. Baris Gen, IFC, Mr. Matjaz Schroll, Franklin Templeton Investments and Mr.  Vjenceslav Terzic, Quaestus Private Equity. 

After the networking lunch break, the event resumed with the third session of the day, focusing on Mergers & Acquisitions within SEE. The session started by a presentation from Mr. Jurgis Oniunas, Managing Director, Ascendant Capital Advisors. Mr. Oniunas provided a drop-down on recent M&A activity in the region, featuring recent facts and figures in M&A trends and developments, privatisation and cross-border transactions.

The session was finalised by the M&A panel discussion “Corporate M&A-Key Deal Drivers, moderated by Ms. Katka Krosnar, Mergermarket and joined by Mr. Jurgis Oniunas, Ascendant Capital Advisors, Mr. Igor Cicak, Provectus Capital, Mr. Robert Gebhardt, Nomura International Plc and  Mr. Josip Marohnic, odvjetnik (attorney at law) in cooperation with Karanovic & Nikolic.

After a brief coffee break, the conference resumed with the Venture Capital & Angel Investment Session, by Dr. Paris Kokorotsikos, CEO, Euroconsultants, who provided a presentation on the use of structural funds for seed VC and other financial engineering instruments in SEE. Mr. Kokorotsikos highlighted the need for regulation in order to realise the potential for further development. 

The final panel of the day “Venture Capital & Angel Investment” moderated by Ms. Mirna Marovic, CVCA & VentureXchange, was joined by Mr. Jure Mikuz, RSG Capital, Dr. Paris Kokorotsikos, Euroconsultants, Mr. Mihovil Barancic, CRANE and Mr. Ivica Cerina, NGN Capital. 

The conference moved to the final part of the programme with a presentation by Mr. Michael White, Partner at EnerCap Capital Partners, who presented on the investment opportunities in  SEE  within the renewable energy sector. 

Mr. David Schoch then closed the conference with a few choice comments and everyone retired to the networking area for the cocktail reception.
