10th CEE Energy Conference 2014

The 10th Annual CEE Energy Conference took place at the InterContinental Hotel in Warsaw on Thursday 11th December. The event united key players from across the energy sector, covering essential topics and tackling the leading issues currently facing the security of the energy market throughout CEE.

We would like to thank all attendee’s for helping make the event a success, with special thanks reserved for our Associate Sponsor, Noerr (Poland) who provided a great contribution throughout the event. 

Our Chairman for the day, Professor Wladyslaw Mielczarski of the Technical University of Lodz opened the conference with a few comments before handing over to Mr Pawel Ryglewicz from the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs who provided us with a welcoming address, sharing his thoughts on the current market in Poland. 

The first presentation of the day was given by Dr Robert Ubermann (Polish Association of Mineral Asset Valuation) who provided us with an insight into the Expected Payback Period as a key factor in the shaping of the energy mix. This was then met with various interesting questions from the audience.

Mr Volodymyr Yaremko (Arzinger, Ukraine) was next to speak. He presented on the regional response to the Ukraine energy and gas crisis, looking at the diversification of gas supply and also the changes within the electricity import, export market. This was followed by our Associate Sponsor, Noerr’s keynote presentation. Mr Pawel Zelich (Poland) looked at the potential of shale gas in Poland, going into detail with regards to regulation and the tax breaks. Our final presentation of the first session was from Mr Zbigniew Kubacki (Ministry of Economy, Poland) who spoke about the Polish Nuclear Power Program. He looked into the objectives of the program, as well as the legal and economic frameworks and the current status of the project. 

Our first networking coffee break followed, giving attendees the ideal opportunity to enjoy refreshment as well as gaining those valuable business cards.

Following the break, we began our Electricity Grid, Pricing and Trading session. Speaking first was Mr Klaus Payrhuber (GE Distributed Power, Austria). Mr Payrhuber spoke about decentralized power, looking at maximizing renewable power dispatch and grid support. We then had Mr Wolfgang Krewel (Alstom Grid, Germany) giving us an update on transmission and grid technologies.

The session finished with a panel discussion hosted by Ms Karolina Zagrodna (ICIS, UK) and Karolina was joined by Mr Klaus Payrhuber, Mr Wolfgang Krewel and Mr Jacque Tohme (Ridgewood Advisors, Romania).

Topics covered included the current status of national power balances, interconnections and TSC cooperation and the effects on the end consumer.

We then moved into the hotel restaurant for a warm buffet lunch and further networking.

Following lunch, we began the final session of the day, looking at the renewable market and overcoming obstacles.

First to speak was Dr Grzegorz Wasiewski (White & Case, Poland) who looked at the shifting of the regulatory frameworks in Poland, as well as the new legislation and the future of the renewable market in Poland.

Mr Christopher Jasiak (Esperotia Investments Ltd, Poland) then gave a case study on renewable project financing in the region, looking at how to structure projects in Poland and the effects the new legislation will have in the future.

We then had a short networking coffee break before Mr Miroslaw Semczuk gave his presentation on energy efficiency and demand response as factors influencing energy security.

To finish the conference, Dr Grzegorz Wasiewski hosted our second panel discussion which focused on the challenges of renewable penetration. Mr Tomasz Tomasiak (Raiffeisen Bank, Poland), Mr Jean-Claude Moustacakis (Green Bear Corporation), Mr Andrzej Rejner (Tauron Polska Energia) and Mr Mats Lundin (Celynx Energy Solutions, Ukraine) all gave their views on the various issues such as the effect of the continually changing regulation and the regulatory influence on current investor appetite.

Our Chairman then closed the conference with his final remarks.

In the evening, everyone was invited to the Marriott Hotel Sky Bar, for drinks and food hosted by the CEE Energy Awards. A great evening was had by all.
