4th Turkey Private Equity & Venture Capital Summit

The 4th Turkey Private Equity & Venture Capital Summit was hosted at the prestigious Elite Wolrd Hotel in Istanbul. With up to 100 registered delegates from across the globe attracting about 8 countries from Europe (UK, Luxembourg, Hungary, Netherlands) connecting to Middle East (Azerbaijan, Qatar and of course Turkey) extending to delegates in Asia (Tajikistan) and attracting delegates from the USA. Attendees included Turkish government and financial institutions as representatives such as Mr Ali Arslan (Director) Financial Sector Relations and Exchange and Mr Sertac Fuad Karaagaoglu of Borsa Istanbul. This highly anticipated platform provided the opportunity to discuss the outlook on the Private Equity market, the strategies and lessons that can be learned from previous acquisitions, the value of private equity within specific sectors e.g. infrastructure, energy and retail, along with the role of family businesses and new incentives for angel investors.

We were privileged to have the Chairman of the board for Global Energy Mr Kanat Emiroglu as the Chair of the conference providing a personal analysis of the current economic outlook and how this affects Turkey Private Equity. 

Following his welcoming address, the first presentation was provided by our Gold Sponsors Bezen & Partners who gave an extensive presentation on the business and legal considerations for investing in Turkey.  This was delivered by a Partner, Ms Nadia Cansun. Subsequently Mr Sertac Fuad Karaagaoglu (Borsa Istanbul) took the stage and was able to offer a current overview of the economic climate, its advancement and particular sectors that Turkey is looking to grow. 

The first panel discussion addressed an overview of the macroeconomic outlook and the impact on Private Equity. This panel was then welcomed to the floor moderated by Mr Cagdas Catalas (Control Risks) while the panel consisted of experts in the market including Mr Hakan Akbas (Albright Stonebridge Group), Mr Mark White Lewis (IMF), Mr Ibrahim Aksoy (Gedik Investment), Simten Ozturk (Garanti Bank). Panellists gave a unique perspective on the political effects on foreign direct investments, opportunities and sustainable strategies for Turkey and liquidity climate for Turkish banks. 

Time for the first networking coffee break; delegates were enthusiastic about networking with speakers and delegates, filling up the reception area with lengthy discussions about previous sessions.  Participants then took to their seats to one of the most anticipated panel discussions of the day. With seven professionals in total, this was bound to be an interesting session. With Mr Tarik Sarligil (3 seas Capital Partners) moderating this session, he posed interesting questions focusing on the appetite of limited partners toward the Turkish market, the performance of PE funds, lessons learnt from major acquisitions such as Yorsan and Namet, along with exit strategies suitable for the Turkish private equity market. These topics were discussed in great detail with six experts including Omar Ali Syed (Abraaj Capital), Mehmet Ilkin (EBRD), Kerem Goktan (Unlu & Co), Alp Guler (Carlyle Group), Gary Vinokur (UBS), and Ekim Inan Kankotan (Société Générale).   

Following an exotic Turkish cuisine, everyone returned to hear another interesting panel discussion which covered specific sectors including Infrastructure, Energy, Privatisations and Retail. Panellists gave differing perspectives on the role of private equity in infrastructure and energy, the expected opportunities for the medium-term outlook in the energy sector along with regional crisis’s and political instability affecting the Turkish energy market. Mr Onder Kartal (Aurum) gladly moderated the panel discussion which included panellists such as Onsun Kaya Yurtal (TEB/BNP Paribas), Famer Engin (EKF/Danish Commission), Nadia Cansun, (Bezen & Partners). 

With the final networking coffee break, delegates swarmed the reception area as they engaged in conversations about the thought-provoking panel discussions. They were then escorted to their seats for the fourth session which covered Family Businesses.  Three consecutive presentations detailed the information focused purely on family businesses. The first presentation given by Mr Murat Erkurt (Mediterra) covered partnering with family businesses and entrepreneurs where he was able to offer a case study for LOGO Business Solutions. The second presentation was given by Burak Bayhan (Is Private Equity) who shared the perception of Private Equity in creating value in Turkish companies: Aras Kargo. Finally, IFC was able to round up this session with a detailed presentation on the new and existing funds they offer for family businesses. Ms Tahmina Nurova (IFC) spoke on corporate governance: IFC Global expertise and Turkey.

Last but not least, Angel investment experts were able to end the informative and successful day with an interactive panel discussion moderated by Ali Karabey (212), with panellists, Ali Arslan (Financial Sector Relations and Exchange), Asli Isinak Gozoren (Keiretsu Forum), Hasan Aslanoba (Aslanoba Capital), Elbruz Yilmaz (3TS Capital). They discussed new government incentives, tax incentives for angel investors and the growing need for more venture capital. This final panel discussion was described as enjoyable, interactive and a great way to end the conference.

Mr Onder Kartal (Aurum) gave a few closing remarks sharing the financial overview of the private equity sector in Turkey, and expressed how the interactive family business sessions drew interest to the family business sector in Turkey.

The conference came to a close while it was time for authentic Turkish canapés with a glass of wine through a cocktail reception. Guests stayed till late with the perfect opportunity to network with participants, discuss the topics in the conference and share their general perspective.
