5th Turkey Renewables Congress & Exhibition
Following Ersin Kara's (Project Manager, E.E.L. Events) introduction and thanks to the event sponsors, the day began with a welcoming address from our chairmen, Atila Gurbuz (Ministry of Energy) and Servet Akgun (Statkraft Trading). They were followed by a Ministerial address from Nihat Zeybekci along with Taner Yildiz. The session continued with a market update by Sebahattin Oz (Directorate of Renewable Energy/Ministry of Energy). He spoke about the legislation on renewable energy sources in Turkey and incentives to promote the use of these resources. Mr Atif Kir (Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry Privatization Administration) then took to the lectern to talk about privatisations in the Turkey Electricity Market. His presentation was followed by Ali Ozan Karaduman (Mehmet Gun & Partners) who discussed the new electricity market law, before Bulent Ozan (Ernst & Young) gave his presentation on business models in distributed energy.
After a brief networking coffee break, Ahmet Tohma (Garanti Bank) opened the Bankability and Finance session by speaking about financing options for renewable energy projects. This introduced the Bankability of Renewable Energy panel which was chaired by Mustafa Salman (Turkey). He was joined by Tunc Alyanak (IFC), Altug Atilkan (Herdem & Co) and Onur Buyukbozkirli (DenizBank) to debate the main challenges faced when financing projects and how to overcome them, along with risks investors may not be willing to take and the impact of energy exchange /EPIAS to the renewable energy market in Turkey.
The session was concluded by a presentation from Dominic Hereth (Finance in Motion) who discussed financing renewable projects with the Green for Growth Fund.
A lunch break provided another networking opportunity, and the Congress continued with an Electricity Production and Trading session. This was opened by Safak Herdem (Herdem & Co) and was followed by presentations from Mustafa Gozen (EPDK) and Bilal Simsek (TEDAS).
After a second networking coffee break, Yetik Kadri Mert (EnerjiSA) began the final session on Solar, Wind & Hydro with his presentation on wind power capacity, and was followed by Ismail Hakki Karaca (GENSED) giving an overview of Turkey’s solar energy market and Yuksel Malkoc describing investment opportunities in the wind energy market in Turkey. The conference proceeded with a renewable energy panel discussion. Mustafa Tiris (T-Dinamik), the panel chair, was joined by Ahmet Hatipoglu (Limak Energy), Ahmet Tohma, Doruk Ozulu (Mitsubishi Corp) and Erhan Cakar (Eurosolar). Highlights of the debate included discussions on the current issues in financing wind projects, the role of IFI investments and the key financing issues for upcoming solar deals. Finally, Simten Ozturk (Garanti Bank) closed the conference with a presentation on the future of hydro in Turkey.
After closing remarks from the conference chairman, delegates retired to the networking cocktail reception for the opportunity to relax, share their thoughts and swap business cards.
